Located on Hwy. 11 at the Aloha Theater in Kainaliu, just south of Keauhou. Description: The Aloha Theater is a gathering place for the Kona community, bringing live entertainment, films and theater to the heart of Kainaliu and nothing goes better with a good show, then good food. First established as a snack bar in 1932 to feed the hungry theater patrons, the Aloha Angel Café transformed into a restaurant in the 1970s and since has been making a name for itself. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner the Aloha Angel has become a popular spot for tourists traveling in between North and South Kona, visitors on their way to Volcano and is largely frequented by locals attracted by the hearty, local fare, vegetarian options and beautiful lanai seating, giving a wonderful view of the water. The Aloha Angel supports the local farmers and fisherman by buying locally and serving greens, coffee and fresh fish from the island. The lanai, which is situated along the Southern side of the building, providing a corridor-style seating, is only available as a breakfast and lunch option. The dinning room, where dinner is served, is located on the north end of the building and is a small, intimate recently restored room, decorated with Hawaiiana décor and with large windows lining the front entrance. The breakfast menu offers a wide variety of options, ranging from a local favorite, the Fresh Catch of the Day and Eggs, a filet of fish either blackened or grilled and eggs served with garlic red potatoes or rice and multi-grain toast or cornbread. Breakfast specialties include the Tofu Sauté; tofu and red onions sautéed in shoyu and a hint of sesame oil and topped with melted cheese and green onion and also served with the above selections. Other breakfast (and much of the menu is offered through the lunch hour) items include: waffles, pancakes, French toast and a plethora of local-style Ala Carte offerings such as sides of avocado, rice or papaya. Lunch favorites include selections such as the Hamburger Steak, a local plate that serves a 6 oz hamburger with white rice and homemade potato-mac salad and topped with grilled onions and smothered in gravy. Other options range from the Coconut Lemongrass Yellow Curry to Grilled Marinated Orange Ginger Chicken Sandwich to Soups and Salads, Burgers, Burritos, Nachos -- with chicken, tofu or fresh fish options -- to a Veggie Wrap made with Julienne carrots, sprouts, cucumber, avocado & fresh mixed organic baby greens with chipolte sauce, wrapped in a tomato tortilla. The dinner menu offers an arrangement of many of the same sandwiches, burgers, soup and salads that are offered throughout lunch. The specific dinner items begin with their Pupus, selections such as Sauté Garlic Mushrooms, New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels and Calamari Strips; calamari lightly dusted with panko and topped with a warm lemon caper sauce. Dinner entrees range from the Fresh Catch of the Day, fish such as Ahi, Mahi Mahi or Ono are typically the catch, to Lamb Chops, Rib Eye Steak, Pasta dishes, Gyro Pitas to Hawaiian Style Cajun Chicken or Tofu; a plate that comes filled with chicken breast or tofu lightly dusted with Cajun spices and served with Aloha Sauce -- a homemade pineapple mango chutney -- and topped with Mac nuts and served with fresh vegetables and a choice of red potatoes or rice. While there isn’t a dessert menu, make sure to ask the waiter about the Café’s baked goods that might still be available. There is a daily selection of cakes, pies, cookies and brownies. The dress for the Aloha Angel Café is casual. They do not accept separate checks and reservations for Sunday brunch or weekend breakfast is recommended as the wait can be long.
